Peter says

"Pensioners and others with savings and insurance depend upon good regulation for protection from poor practices, such as mis-selling. The European Parliament's work helps to create a safe environment for savers and investors.

Tony Blair has taken steps to bring greater transparency into the dealings of mining companies with foreign governments so as to stop bribery and corruption by promoting the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (EITI). The European Parliament has now incorporated this initiative in an EU-wide legislation which will force publicly quoted companies to publish in their annual reports what they pay governments for the rights to extract oil, gas and other natural resources.

I also work to support animal welfare campaigns to minimise experimentation and protect endangered species. The Parliament recently called for a ban on seal products in the EU, due to inhumane killing methods."

Transparency

The expenditure of Labour MEPs' general expenditure and secretarial allowances is reviewed through an audit process carried out by an independent qualified accountant who provides the EPLP with a signed letter testifying that the allowances have been spent in accordance with the Parliament rules and the EPLP's own guidelines.  Please find a copy of this letter here.
