Imported shoes price hiked

What they said

Daily Express, 24 March 2006

A load of cobblers

Britons will soon have to pay 20 per cent more on shoes imported from China and Vietnam.

The truth

This is grossly exaggerated. There is no evidence for claims that prices will go up 20 per cent as a result of European Union anti-dumping measures to counter unfair trade. The increase in duty planned could put about 70p on the leather shoes affected - only nine pairs of out of 100. The Commission expects that retailers will be able to absorb this. Also, children's shoes and high-tech footwear are not touched.
